This course is designed to prepare you to enter the beauty or media sector as a specialist make-up artist, with the specific skill of providing fashion and photographic make-up services.

You will learn how to develop your design skills to create your own looks and styles, perfecting all the essential skills needed as a makeup artist like achieving clean symmetrical eyeliner for close up photography, makeup for black & white photography, how to keep up with current trends / brands / products, the art of contouring for subtle to extreme results, classic to alternative bridal looks, explore the history of makeup and the varying looks throughout the decades, and crucially, you will learn the skills of perfecting the flawless ‘no makeup’ makeup look which is called upon more often than not for editorial work.

Our courses take place in our fully fitted studio located on Old Hall Street in Liverpool. There are two options for our Level 3 course.

The course will run for 12 weeks as follows:

Daytime Thursdays 12-4pm

Evenings Thursdays 5-9pm

Course details

What does the course involve?

Joining us at level 3 you will already have a good basic knowledge and understanding of makeup as well as practical skills. Alongside the 6 key looks you will cover in your assessment briefs, you will also cover the following techniques:

Contouring- subtle & dramatic
Brows – grooming, sculpting, covering
Eye makeup – blending & symmetry, eyeliner, cut crease, false lashes
Lips – perfecting neat edges, enhancing shape & size with realistic results
Textures – cream, matte, shimmer, gloss, liquid
Completing the look with hair & accessories
Understanding photographic lighting for colour and black & white
Help & advice on working as freelance makeup artist
Advice on possible career paths & progression routes

Alongside the practical aspects of the course, it also covers theory on health & safety, anatomy and physiology, client care and retail in the makeup industry.

You will have written/design work to complete at home and home practical work (we always strongly recommend you continue to practice your skills at home – practice makes perfect!)

What is provided?

You have the option of buying a professional kit from us which will contain all essential makeup and tools. Alternatively, you can bring your own kit (subject to rigorous hygiene checks) which must have essential items, including:

Brush kit
A range of foundation colours (light, medium, dark, etc.)
A range of eyeshadow colours and textures
Eyeliner (liquid, gel, pencil)
Mascara
A range of lip colours, lip pencils

Standard consumable items such as cotton buds, cotton pads, mascara wands etc. will be provided.

The Level 2 course is Vocational Training Charitable Trust (VTCT) accredited.
